Different Ways to Heat Your Home This Winter

Times are changing in the world of HVAC. Unlike the past, homeowners today have several options when it comes to keeping warm during the winter months. If you are in the market for a new heating system, here are a few options you can consider:

Furnace

Furnaces are one of the oldest, and by far the most popular, methods of home heating in the United States. Also known as a forced-air system, the furnace burns gas (oil, natural gas, or propane) to generate heat, and blows this hot air through ducts to heat your home.

Boiler

Unlike furnaces, which heat air, boilers rely on hydronic (water) heating to warm your home. These systems heat water and distribute it through radiators, which release warmth into the air. The water is then returned to the boiler where it is re-heated.

Ductless Heating

As you can tell by the name, a ductless heating system (also referred to as a “mini-split system”) does not require the use of air ducts. Instead, the combination of an outdoor compressor and multiple indoor air-handling units are used to keep your home at your desired temperature.

Radiant Heat

Radiant heating is a relatively new technology that is gaining popularity. A radiant heating system heats tubes under the floor, thus warming the floor and causing this heat to rise throughout your home. The best part? No more cold feet!

Heat Pump

Despite the name, heat pumps can be used to heat or cool your home. They are essentially a two-way air conditioner; removing heat from your home during the summer months, and bringing it into your home (with the help of an electrical system) during the wintertime.
