Common AC Problems

Ac unit

When you’re living in the Fairfax, VA area, you already know how important a role your AC plays in how comfortable your home is. When it’s the middle of a hot summer day, you’re not going to want to find out that your AC isn’t working. But the sooner you know the cause of the problem, the sooner you can get it fixed. These are some common AC problems that you may experience.

Common AC Problems:

Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant is usually caused by improper charging when your AC is first installed or by a physical leak. If there is a leak, you’ll need to call an HVAC technician to fix the leak, test it, and then charge the system with the right level of refrigerant.

Electric Control Failure

If your AC is turning on and off often, your compressor and fan controls can wear down. This can cause wire and terminal corrosion, so you should contact a professional to look at the electrical connections in your system.

Sensor Problems

If you own a room AC, your unit relies on a thermostat sensor to measure how cool or warm the air coming into the evaporator coil is. If your sensor is moved or faulty, your AC won’t cycle properly and you’re home won’t be cool. Carefully adjust the sensor position so it’s near the evaporator coil but not touching it.

Poor Maintenance

One of the most common AC problems is poor maintenance. If you allow dirt to build up on air filters and coils, your unit won’t have the right air flow and won’t run properly as a result. Make sure to clean your evaporator coils and clean or replace your air filters regularly.
