DIY Fall Furnace Tune-Up

A little bit of maintenance can go a long way for your home heating system. Keep yours running in tip-top shape this year with this simple do-it-yourself tune up from the experts at Air Treatment Company.

  • Change the air filter. Changing your air filter helps keep dust and debris out of your heating system, and is the most important step in any HVAC maintenance routine. In fact, experts estimate that up to 80% of all heating equipment problems are caused by dirty filters.

  • Clean the burner. Locate the burner element and clean off any dust and debris that may have accumulated during the summer months. Inspect it for signs of rust, and make sure it is properly aligned with the furnace.

  • Oil the blower. Your blower should be sufficiently lubricated at all times in order to prevent unnecessary wear-and-tear. Turn off your circuit breaker, remove the blower from your furnace, and place a few drops of oil in each port.

  • Inspect your vents. Even if your furnace is operating at max capacity, you won’t be able to tell if your air vents are blocked. Take a walk around your home and make sure all of your vents are clear of furniture, curtains, and other obstructions.

  • Turn it on. Once you’ve completed all of these steps, it’s time to turn your furnace on and give it a test run. Even if it isn’t cold enough to warrant heating your home yet, leave it on for at least a couple hours to make sure everything is running smoothly.

If you notice any problems during your test run, it may be time to seek professional assistance. The home heating and cooling experts at Air Treatment Company would be happy to inspect and repair any and all of your furnace problems.
